Glückliches Oktoberfest!
Every late September to early October, countless tourists and German natives in Munich, along with Bavarian beer-loving communities all over the world, gather together to raise a glass (or two, or three) in celebration of the heritage festival of Oktoberfest.
Seasonal festivals, particularly the love of arts and crafts, cooking, and home-brewing they inspire, share and celebrate the ideals of maker culture – the art of learning practical skills and applying them creatively.
This particular festival is well known for its beer brews and tasty food, with many German communities across the world going all-out, serving up countless special brews along with traditional foods, crafts, music and general Frölichkeit.
We’re doing our own Oktoberfest here at Macktez this year, with a classic Oktoberfest brew cooked up by the Team, and we’d like to take this opportunity to celebrate with you. As they say in Germany, “Zum Wohl!”
Maker Kultur
Learning practical skills and applying them creatively is at the core of any consultancy, and at Macktez we believe that to get good at anything, you need not just passion and enthusiasm, but also practice, repetition, and the willingness to learn from past experiences, in order to improve.
From the RepRap 3d printer we’ve been assembling, to home-built bikes, home-cooked meals, and our growing garden of indoor plants, we love watching and sharing our Teammates’ explorations into the art of making things.
Our first, and favorite, Team foray into the world of maker culture, though, certainly remains the one into the delicious world of home-brewed beer. Like many of our projects, we’ve been trying different techniques, testing, improving, and iterating towards a better brew.
Brewing requires meticulous attention to detail, creativity within structure, and a big dose of good, old fashioned Teamwork.
We love balancing levity, precision, and efficiency, and sharing the satisfaction of a job well done. Brewing and bottling together is great, especially when our work yields such tasty results! We ordered delightfully distinctive yellow (of course!) bottle caps to top off the job, and we thought we’d invite you to celebrate with us by sharing the love.

Congratulations to Andrew Ellis, our 2013 Summer Stipend recipient! His cookbook, New Urban Eating, uses an ethnographic methodology to explore the growing, vibrant food scene in Oakland with recipes and stories from restaurant owners, artisans and food justice organizations. At Macktez we cultivate and refine much more than beer. We apply the same concepts to hone and improve tools we use every day. Visit macktez.com/documentary and check out the mini-documentary made with our friends over at UnionDocs to see what goes into producing our much-loved Yellow Notebooks!
